• Describe the pattern of class differences in educational achievement
• Understand the difference between internal and external factors affecting achievement
• Understand and be able to evaluate the role of different external factors, including cultural and material deprivation as well as cultural capital
• Understand the effect on social class differences in educational achievement of the following internal factors: labelling, self fulfilling prophecy, streaming, pupil subcultures and marketisation and selection
• Evaluate the relative importance of internal and external factors in causing social class differences in educational achievement
