Ethnicity and Crime:

  • Know the patterns of ethnicity and criminalisation as shown by different sources of data
  • Understand the relationship between the CJ process and ethnicity
  • Evaluate sociological explanations of the relationship between ethnicity, offending and criminalisation
  • Understand the relationship between ethnicity, racism and victimisation

We need to have a good understanding of the statistics behind our understanding of ethnicity and crime, i.e. what do they show and can we criticise them for any reason? Following on from this we want to understand sociological explanations for these statistics as well as the relationship between the criminal justice process and ethnicity. There is a relationship, some would argue an unfair one, that we want to understand.

Use the booklet to understand these perspectives as well as the homework booklet to give more of an understanding about a case from the news in the past.
