Family diversity and the life course

We need to:

• Know a range of sociological views of family diversity

• Understand what the difference is between modernist and post-modernist approaches to family diversity

• Analyse and evaluate sociological explanations for family diversity

In this topic we are looking at the reasons for changes in society and how that has impacted on the family. We explore the diversity of family types now and what modernism is as well as post-modernism. These perspectives differ from each other in a number of ways which we shall explore in the topic with modernists arguing that there is one best family type that suits society whereas post-modernists argue there is not and individuals within society make rational choices over what family type they wish to be a part of.
